Another terrible giant monster destroys New York City

Oh, my gad. This is so realistic, so true; you can hear it wherever, in videos and movies, goddamn American people whispering, saying, yelling, shouting, screaming out: oh my gad.
So you can hear it in here a lot of times:

Cloverfield by M. Reeves (2008)
☻☻

because a new! improved! bigger! monster even more bad than Godzilla is going to smash New York City. Once again. As you can see above this dvd-rip from the torrent's got something terrible within, a nasty evil thing called bad compression; that just adds here and there some visual unexpected spice to the otherwise plain and bare mockumentaristic footage. I've seen a lot of mockumentaries now; recently it was a fake non-mockumentary with a lot of hand-held-cam shooting -Children of Men- and the Spanish [REC] on YouTube, based on a fake (but professionally justified) tv reportage; even Slacker is kind-of a mockumentary -with style- but Cloverfield officially belongs to the list of "Found Footage", along with the "classic" Blair Witch Project.

There surely are two copycat shots here:

the massive running down the stairs and

the great cloud of dust in the streets

In the very same streets of the 9.11. Yet, as far as I know you can copycat TV news however you want; since they can sell that for truth, no law could forbid the use of it as if it were true... in movies.

Lesson no.1 to hit New York City, from Planet of the Apes to Ghostbusters (to X-Men):

hit the Old Lady!

That does work every time. And, by the way, there's also just a bit of night vision here, perhaps as an homage to BWP, in a sequence that closely reminds us one from the non-mockumentaristic "Vin Diesel movie" Pitch Black:

(WARNING: SPOILER)

But so closely.
There's a monster, too; this time no scientific theories about what is it, or where it comes from; it is big and bad enough to cut down all the classic mumbo-jumbo about invaders from outer space, radioactivity or environmental pollution, and all of the classic monster-movie frills from Them! to Gojira to The Host. Not even the slightest clue. But yes, there's a monster:

(warning: spoiler)

and he's ready to swallow you up with all of your shoes.
Uh, ok, maybe not your handycam, though.
I'd say Cloverfield is not a bad monster-movie; neither a bad mockumentary; and since you know that the movie is a mockumentary with a giant monster destroying NYC in it, then it's all right.
As such, this is the best one I've seen so far.

  1. yea, a monster with lungs instead of the ears; what could be more spooky than that?
